My garage turned into a workshop for the last two weeks!
It was a sunny fall day and we had no big plans so we decided to take the kids to the park! On the way out to the car Nick said "hey, I think there's a garage sale going on down the street. Lets walk down and check it out before we go!" Needless to say, we never made it to the park. Turns out there were two garage sales and an estate sale all going on at the same time. I'd never been to an estate sale, so maybe they're not all like this, but this was an "everything must go" sale and we totally hit the jackpot! We found a beautiful 1970's bedroom set that I just LOVE, a dresser, and a Bistro table and chairs set, all for ridiculously cheap. We called our awesome home teacher (thanks Phil!) and moved the furniture out of that house and into our garage.
We immediately got to work. In fact, Nick took off all the old nasty hardware before I could even take pictures! We sanded and sanded and sanded some more for days (or really nights, after the kids were in bed). Then came the painting (which I left up to Nick's expertise) while I filled in the old holes with wood filler. After even more sanding, everything got painted and we moved everything into the house. We spent many nights in the garage working, but the bedroom set is finally complete (minus the mirrors that don't fit in our bedroom).
Nightstand before....
So in all the chaos of new furniture, I decided to give Lyssa and Alec their own rooms. Lyssa is in the Winnie the Pooh room now, and Alec now has dominion over what used to be the guest room. (Guest will still have a bed, it's just now in the basement. :-)
So now I need your help. We want to decorate Alec's room in a "transportation" theme, but after splurging on all this stuff last month my budget is a little on the tight side. Have any ideas for me?

You are so talented. I love the re-finishing projects. Again!! YOu shock and amaze me with your talents. I think you should make Alec's room a choo-choo train room. Anyways take care!!
I'm not sure if this is actually helpful, but I once read a tip that said a great place to find high quality images is in calendars. For the price of one calendar, you get 12 top-notch pictures. Just cut them out and frame them. I love the idea of buying mis-matched frames and painting them one color to unify them. Red would be so cute & would be a great match to fire trucks, or a good contrast to construction machines, cars, or airplanes. If you want to paint, don't forget to check the "oops" area in Home Depot or Lowe's. I've gotten some really expensive paint for cheap this way.
What a snag! You guys did such an awesome job redoing the set. It is beautiful! I'm so impressed with your work!
You guys work fast! Good job!
Wow! That is quite the find and you guys did a great job fixing it up. How fun. I like Amy's idea for pictures in Alec's room. I've been trying to come up with something for my boy's room. I think I just might borrow that idea.
Wow, Chrissy! I'm impressed! The furniture looks awesome! You guys did an amazing job refinishing the pieces!
I must say I am super impressed with the work you did on the furniture--it looks amazing! Refinishing furniture is such hard work but it's so worth it in the end!
Love love love the new furniture! How fun!
Alec's room: My sister painted dark blue and gray strips on the upper portion of the walls, with white beadboard on the bottom 1/2. Then she found an old picture book of Thomas the Train on ebay and framed the older looking story book pages. It turned out really cute.
Loves!
Wow, that looks like a lot of work. We're so lame. We just go pick up stuff from Ikea and assemble it.
