Meet Budah. He's Alec's beta fish. Alec named him all by himself. Can you tell?
A few weeks ago we were all out for a nice family walk on a Sunday afternoon when out of no where Nick informed me that he was thinking about getting a cat. He said you can find tons of them on Craig's List. After reminding him that we are currently in the business of growing people not animals, I also reminded him that in my current pregnant state I can't even change cat litter therefore he would be entirely responsible. The next day I made an executive decision. Monday night for Family Home Evening we headed out to PetCo to buy the most Chrissy friendly pet available. Beta Fish. Alec has Budah happily residing in his bedroom next to his garlic bulb that he proudly planted at preschool a few weeks ago. Doesn't it look so calm and serene?
Lyssa named her crimson red beta fish Dora, after her new favorite television character Dora the Explorer. I wasn't surprised in the least. Dora hangs out on Lyssa's dresser for the time being. We'll see where he ends up after we rearrange her room to fit in our new addition in September.
When I asked the kids how they felt about their new fish friends, I mostly got this reaction... but I think it had to do with the fact that I pulled out the camera. I think Alec is a riot.
And little Lyssa is only getting more like her brother in that way. Pull out a camera, tell her to say cheese, and half the time you'll get a smile. The other half of the time you get a face like this. She's my crazy lady.
So our pet needs have now been fulfilled. All I have to do is feed them every 2-3 days and change their water once a week, though Nick has been doing that on Sundays with the kids. I like our little beta fish pets. They're pretty, take up very little space, don't shed, don't stink, don't try to escape, won't eat us out of house and home, and don't make a peep. That's my kind of pet. :-)

When my roommate left in the middle of the semester, I got a beta fish, and that was the best pet ever. He lived longer than I thought, almost 3 years. But he (I have no real idea if it was a boy or not...) was great, and learned to jump out of the water for his food. Sweet. Enjoy your new familial additions.
I couldn't agree with you more!!!
Best pets EVER. Except maybe chickens. Chickens lay eggs.
Ryan says he wants a beta fish too. I told him Petco's closed right now.
Congrats on the fun, easy pets. I love, LOVE beta fish. I have owned several in my life time and have enjoyed how easy they are while fulfilling my "pet needs" and brightening up my life and home. However, I should warn you, two of the five betas I have owned in my adult life have tried to escape/commit suicide, and both eventually succeeded. Betas can (and do) jump out of their bowls. Good luck and have fun!
