~Summer Vacation 2010: Independence Day~

July 3, 2010
Independence Day happened to fall on a Sunday this year.  In Utah not much happens on Sunday, so they decided to make it a weekend long celebration... mostly centering around different yummy foods we wanted to eat. Since everyone in my family was in town most of our celebration happened on the 3rd, starting out with a delightful brunch with Grandma Marion and the Malan cousins!  Nick made about a hundred of his famous red white and blue crepes, and I'm pretty sure I ate 5.  They were just too good to pass up!
After a few hours to let our stomachs settle, we started on prep for our Independence Day mid-day feast. Ryan and Erin made some divine pork chops and mashed potatoes, that were accompanied by lots of other yummy delights including fresh home squeezed limeade.  Yummmmm.  We shared the meal with a group of Robert's friends, who all proved to be very entertaining conversationalists.  They thought my kids were really cool, which is a sure fire way to win my heart.
Then what would a Starks family gathering be without music?  We had a semi-impromptu concert in the backyard, where everyone was given the opportunity to perform if they so desired.  My kids rocked out on their harmonicas for a few minutes, but we were all mostly entranced by the guitars.  I even got Robert and Michael to perform "Let My Love Open The Door", possibly one of  my favorite love songs.  It totally made my day.
After a few more hours of relaxing, we headed over to my dad's office.  It's right down the street from the BYU football stadium, where they do a FANTASTIC firework display at the end of Stadium of Fire.  We were able to pull right into the parking lot, set up camp chairs, and enjoy the evening while dining on Pita Pit pitas and fabulous shakes from the Malt Shoppe (both favorites from our college days).  Then we sat back and enjoyed the fireworks.  Lyssa was scared at first but eventually warmed up and realized that fireworks may be loud but they are BEAUTIFUL!  Alec was sooo happy to snuggle next to Grandpa Steve and enjoy every second of the view.  I'm not sure which I enjoyed more... watching my kids reactions or watch the amazing firework display.
What a wonderful way to spend Independence Day.

I barely saw any of the fireworks because I was too busy watching Lyssa and Alec.

Ah, the Malt Shoppe. I miss that place...good to know that it's still there. I haven't been down that way for quite a while. Funny, I tried making my own limeade last week and it stunk...I'm glad to hear of some coming out right because I was beginning to doubt that it was possible to make good limeade ;)
